Eric's mother won the spring edition of the "Bid on Burlington" sponsored by Clear Channel Radio and brought Eric into the studio for the some pix.

I wanted to do something a bit different to really bring out his blue eyes.  I shot him against a large Savage blue seamless backdrop.  I lit the background using a single Dynalite 4040 head fitted with a honeycomb grid spot and lit Eric using

a standard Dynalite head fitted with a softbox.

Exposure was at 1/200th of a second at F16 at 100 ISO (focal length 97mm)

PIX OF THE WEEK - Safa from Rupa and the April Fishes

 SUBJECT: Safa ShokraiSofa_from_Rupa__the_April_Fishes3

LOCATION: The Studio (Colchester, VT)

DATE: April 10, 2008

This image is from a photo session I did with a wonderful, up & coming and unique music act called RUPA & THE APRIL FISHES the other week.

http://theaprilfishes.com/

http://www.myspace.com/aprilfishes

Jacob Edgar of CUMBANCHA RECORDS asked me to shoot the band during a recent performance here and he also then arranged for a studio session while the band was enroute from Montreal to Boston.  This is one of my favorite images that I Sofa_from_Rupa__the_April_Fishes1took that day and it is of Safa Shokrai the standup bass player for the band.

If you ever get a chance to catch Rupa and her Fishes you will not be disappointed.  In June Rupa and her band will be touring thru Europe but back in the States and Canada in June.  You can catch them in the likes of NYC in Central Park in late June and on July 5th during the Montreal Jazz fest and then they back touring on the west coast in the end of July.  You'll think you stepped into a scene in some crazy movie with a bunch of gypsies!!!  Really folks, Rupa is a can't miss act.  Plus, she's a doctor of internal medicine too which is really cool!!!

The background was a simple "fashion gray" seamless Savage paper backdrop. Lighting was provided by a single Dynalite 4040 head mounted in a medium soft box to my left.

Exposure was at 1/125th of a second at F16 at 100 ISO (focal length 105mm)

DATE: March 30, 2008

It was a beautiful sunny day at Stowe this past Sunday and I riding with my camera in my backpack when I decided to take a quick minute break to get a few shots of the park riders. I positioned myself under one of the large jumps and then set the camera on 8.5 fps on the "servo" mode, I added a circular polarizing filter to the lens to darken the sky a bit and to cut dow

n a bit on the glare off the snow. I panned the camera as the rider launched himself off the jump over me.

Exposure was at 1/2000th of a second at F4 at 100 ISO and a focal length of 24 mm.

PIX OF THE WEEK - Wedding Dress (Ria)
Dec 27, 2009 07:23:37

SUBJECT: Wedding Dress (Ria)

RM0H0383

LOCATION: Ft. Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT)

CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN

LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series

DATE: March 2008

In the first image, I took my inspiration from the  old 1940s Hollywood Lighting techniques used by the greats such as George Hurrell. I had Ria sit on the gray seamless paper backdrop about 8 feet from the curve. I lit her using 2 Dynalite heads -- one  overhead mounted on a boom with a snoot attached. I place the otherlight about 12 feet away from her to my left and about 9 feet up   with a honeycomb grid spot directed at her dress (the main light being on the boom overhead). Exposure was 1/160th of a second at F10  (100 ISO).

In the second image, Ria was standing the white seamless paper about 10-12 feet from the curve to the floor. I placed large black 4x8 foot panels on either side of her just out of  view so as to create some slight shadows on the edges and to  prevent  light spill from the background heads which were being  fired at full  power. The main light was a Dynalite 4040 head fired  thru a medium  soft box mounted behind me high up. I also used a  another Dynalite  4040 head with a honeycomb grid spot as well to  fill in any shadows  caused by the other head being mounted high.  The background lighting  was provided by 2 heads fired at full  power. Exposure was at 1/160th  of a second at F11.

PIX OF THE WEEK - Lightening on Lake Champlain

LOCATION: Lake Champlain, Vermont (from my home)JMW_Website_Pics_037

CAMERA: Canon EF

LENS: Canon 50mm F1.4 lens

FILM: Fuji Velvia (Rated at 40 ISO)

A storm was rolling in from the north, so I quickly grabbed my camera and a tripod and ran down the stairs to the beach and set things up.  I attached a cable release to the shutter button and set the aperture to somewhere in the middle (approx F8) and set the shutter speed to the "bulb" setting and waited.  Using a long shutter speed I was able to capture several bursts of lightening in the distance before the rain started to come down.

NOTE – I used a neutral density filter on the lens so as prevent over-exposure.

The other week, I had the pleasure of sitting in on the recording of the Lowell Thompson Band's new CD at EMP Studios. Lowell had asked me to grab a few shots while they were recording in the studio (hopefully a few will be used in the liner notes of the new album). They sounded great and I am excited about hearing the CD which I am told will be released this spring. In the meantime, check Lowell and the rest of the band out at this Saturday at THE MONKEY HOUSE in Winooski.

Once again, I found myself struggling and struggling with picking just ONE pix for this week's PIX OF THE WEEK series. I got so many amazing shots of Alma it was really tough. She's got amazing skin, beautiful eyes and one of the most engaging looks a photographer could ever hope for. I finally just told myself no matter which one you pick, it will be very nice.

Lighting couldn't have been much more simpler - a Dynalite 4040 head mounted in a soft box to the camera right triggered remotely by a PocketWizard Plus II.

FILM – Fuji Sensia 200

I was riding in one of those rickety buses (they don’t even have windows) that the local islanders ride to get around the island Viti Levu on to get around on my way back to the village in Latoka where I was staying when I spied this baby looking at me from the rearview mirror while sitting on its mother’s lap. I couldn’t resist the opportunity to snap this photo.

Probably to this day, this is one of my all time favorite shots I’ve ever taken – at least in my Top 10.

I shot the image in shutter priority at about 125th of a second.

December 2nd, 2007

I was in South Beach this past week shooting some photos of the famous ArtDeco District along Ocean Drive and Collins Ave.  Built in the 1920s, theColony Hotel is one of South Beach's most famous treasures and mostrecognizable hotels along Ocean Drive due to its stunning blue neon lights.I didn't get as many shots as I would've liked as I was soon hassled by CityCode Compliance Officer Philip Whitehead for not having all the properpermits to shoot.  Can you believe it, he wanted to issue me a citation fornot applying and being issued a filming permit?  That's a new one in mybook -- especially considering photos as these are free tourism advertisingand promotion for the city. He didn't see it that way.

Anyway, here are a couple of images I was able to get before almost being arrested.

Exposure was about 4 secs at F8 with the camera mounted on a tripod.

Jacob Edgar of the record label Cumbancha, in conjunction with the worldmusic label Putumayo, brought yet another great show to Higher Ground'sShowcase Lounge back on November 22nd. Tinariwen is a musical act formed in 1982 in Moammar al-Qadhafi's camps ofTuareg rebels. They play in the Tishoumaren ("music of the unemployed")style, and sing mostly in the French and Tamashek languages. Their songsmostly cover the subject of independence for their people from thegovernment of Mali. They are said to be the first Tuareg band to useelectric guitars.

I'm not sure if and when Jacob is planning on showcasing another great worldmusic talent to the Burlington area, but if he does - you really shouldcheck it out.  His recent showcases have featured the likes of performerssuch as Andy Palacio, Dobet Gnahoré and Vieux Farka Touré.  These shows arenot to be missed.

I wanted to do something a bit different instead of all the cliché baby pix everyone sees so I had the baby's father lay on the ground holding the infant up in the air against a black backdrop. I lit the baby (9 weeks old) with a single softbox mounted high overheadangled down.  And yes, if you are thinking if there was an accident there was (and we were warned too by the baby's mother warned us that as soon as we remove the diaper, expect a little accident).  Luckily for me (but not so lucky for the baby's father), I was ableto get out of the way quickly.

December, 2007

I've always had a thing about photographing signs.  I think it stems from the good old days of when I used to put together slide shows -- and no, not the PowerPoint variety, but actual slide shows with real slides and a projector.  In those days (the film days), I always made it a habit to photograph a street or road sign or an important and recognizable landmark or tee-shirt or something so that I could give a reference point for the viewer where a particular series was taken.  I often found myself takin

g pix of old diner signs (guess I was always  fascinated with old diner cars) - I think because they are fast fading slice of Americana.  No, this pix isn't of a cool diner sign, but rather of another restaurant.

Anyway, I was driving home from Stowe in a snow storm this past December after a great day snowboarding when I noticed how cool the sign at Piecasso's looked in the snow.  I quickly pulled over grabbed my camera to take a couple of shoots.  I did not have any auxiliary lighting or flash with me, so I had set the ISO to 1600 because I needed to have somewhat of a fast shutter speed to avoid tons of white snowflake streaks across the image.  I then set the white balance to AUTO because there were multip

le light sources (tungsten, halogen and mercury vapor)  and figured I could correct the white balance later (actually the camera handled the multiple light sources very well and no post production was needed to correct color and light temperature.

PIX OF THE WEEK - DJ Nastee of VT Union
Dec 18, 2009 00:11:02

SUBJECT: DJ NASTEEDJ_Nastee1

LOCATION: Fort Ethan Allen Studio (Colchester, VT)

CAMERA: Canon Mark 1D IIN

LENS: Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L series

January 13, 2008

The guys from VT UNION dropped by the studio this past weekend for some promotional material shots.  In addition to shooting the group together, we did some individual shots.  Here are a few shots of DJ Nastee that I think really came out well and brought out his personality.

Since I always shoot in RAW format, I normally adjust my lens to be between 1/3 to 1/2 stop under what my light meter reading says that way I can ensure that all the information is captured by the CCD sensor.  By slightly underexposing things, this allows the flexibility to play with the image later for different effects.  It is always easier to increase the exposure later, as opposed to decreasing it (if you overexpose an image, the information is lost forever).  However, in this case, to get the style of lighting and contrast I wanted, I actually bracketed the shots to be about a 1/3 to 1/2 stop over the meter reading.

Also, when shooting against the white background in the studio, I normally have my subjects stand about 10-12 feet in front of the wall.  In this case, I had DJ Nastee stand only about 6 to 7 feet in front of the background so that some of the light would bleed around him creating something of a rim light effect, however, I had to

DJ_Nastee2

be very careful with this approach, as my light meter was giving me a F45 on the background.  Since VT Union is a Rap/DJ group, I adjusted the contrast in the camera (I didn't' want to mess with things in Photoshop later) to bring out that lighting sty

le that is popular in mags like VIBE, ESPN, etc.

Front lighting provided by a 2 Dynalite flash heads (one mounted in a soft box the other simply with a standard reflector.  Background lighting provided by 2 Novatron flash heads fired at full power (both background and front strobes fired remotely by a PocketWizard Plus II).  Fill lighting achieved by using a silver circular reflector hand held by an assistant about 3 feet from the subject.

Exposure was F14 at 1/125th of a second at 100 ISO.
